Gaming Diary: Naruto, The Witness, Hand of Fate, Gears of War, Persona 2

This a new thing I’m doing. If I barely do anything one week, or it’s really uninteresting, I might not write about it. I’ll skip over boring stuff or whatever. Though as I work in the gaming industry you’d hope I’d have some stuff to say now and then. Which is the point of this blog I suppose! I spent a lot of this week playing Naruto Shippuden Ultimate Ninja Storm 4. I lapsed on the Manga partway through the […]

The “Oscars” – Games of the Year 2015 Awards

Last year when I wrote my games of the year list I threw in some bonus awards besides the month-on-months and overall. Now, there are even more bonus awards, because if you head on over to Rice Digital me and my coworker Peter gave our picks on a variety of categories, from Most Frustrating, to Most Awe-Inspiring Moment. It’s a good read. Without going on too much, here are my normal Games of the Year awards. Just Fuck Off Already […]

Why One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 wasn’t quite the game I wanted it to be (Review Retrospective)

One Piece Pirate Warriors 3 is one of the games I’ve followed through pre-release and release the most since working in video games full-time. I followed it along at preview events, and it impressed me quite a bit. To pick up and play it’s a great Warriors game, and features some truly refined and inspired tweaks to the traditional gameplay. Though when playing the full package and reviewing it, it kind of ended up irking me in some ways despite […]

Why I Wasn’t Really a Fan of Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls (Review Retrospective)

A few months ago I reviewed Danganronpa Another Episode: Ultra Despair Girls on Rice Digital. I really loved the first Danganronpa. I couldn’t put it down. For every time it was somewhat “problematic” (the way it handles multiple personality disorder is a bit bad) it was also quite subversive. This is a spin-off set between the first and second game that moves away from its normal Visual Novel gameplay and instead adds in survival horror. Oh, but it also adds in […]

Part 1: Cost – My Thoughts on Playing Games on Console vs Playing Games on PC

This article’s featured image is from Gamespot’s pretty great Batman: Arkham Knight PlayStation 4 & PC comparison article. It’s become one of the more iconic images when it comes to the fairly outrageous mishandling of the PC port of Arkham Knight. There’s a lot of in-depth information about it, most of it an interesting read. The initial comparisons such as Gamespot’s are a good look, and others about the latest PC patches still being poor, and the statements from Warner […]

Why I Loved Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence (Review Retrospective)

In September my review of Nobunaga’s Ambition: Sphere of Influence was published on Rice Digital. You can find it here if you want to read that first. I wrote after spending a couple of intense weeks with the game, and after covering it reasonably extensively during the pre-release period. I got deep into it. And I kind of loved it, despite it having some flaws. I recommend it to a lot of people, and I feel it probably got overlooked […]

Why Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee is one of my favourite games and New ‘n’ Tasty is too (not quite a review)

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee, the first game in the Oddworld series, is one of my favourite games of all time. It’s one of the few PlayStation One games I constantly revisit fairly regularly in my life. I was young when I played it on my uncle’s console, and it was the first time I had encountered something with quite so much depth and scope to the world and it was truly entrancing. For the time it looked phenomenal, and the chunky […]

Roundabout Review

It’s not uncommon for indie games to boast a retro vibe – in fact, possibly the majority. But, while a lot of those result in pixel-based homages to platformers or point and clicks, Roundabout is a pretty perfect pastiche of the FMV video game craze, back from when putting games on a CD was exciting and new. It’s probably the best FMV game ever made. Roundabout marries its fun send-up of FMV sequences with some solid gameplay too. You control […]
