I Am Gotham Review – Batman (2016) #1-6

This story doesn’t just introduce us to a new Batman run (well, I guess Batman: Rebirth did that) and a new Batman writer in Tom King (Grayson, The Vision). I Am Gotham also introduces two new superpowered superheroes, the flamboyant sounding duo of Gotham and Gotham Girl. For King this first story is all about setting up how he’s going to run the show, the sort of writing you can expect, and the tone of the book. Starting his run […]

Modern DC Films – Thoughts on Suicide Squad, The Killing Joke, Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition, Assault on Arkham

Yeah, everyone knows that when it comes to films of comics Marvel has had more than just a little bit of an upperhand in recent years. Though it’s interesting to think that 2005’s Batman Begins ushered in perhaps a “new era” of superhero film. It’s also interesting to note that the oft though pinnacle of Nolan’s Batman trilogy, The Dark Knight, released in 2008, the same year Iron Man also kicked off the now mega successful Marvel Cinematic Universe. With […]

The Martian Review

I don’t really like films about space very much. Space, like the sea (a comparison which is also made in this film), is pretty scary. Generally a lot of “space films”, especially recently, like to play up that angle. And, when such a film is rooted in a lot of scientific fact, it makes it all the more chilling. This is how space really is and space is scary. I won’t say that The Martian completely eschews that angle — […]

DC: Universe Rebirth Review

I’m not the biggest fan of DC in the world. Heck, I’m not even sure I’d call myself a big comics fan. Sure, I do love many comic books, but as far as comic “universes” go? I don’t really care. I read runs people recommend me, I pick out specific graphic novels — I love the stories for what they are. DC: Universe Rebirth is the initial issue of DC’s new big crossover event, though it may not be the […]

Radio Rebel Review (TV Movie 2012) – Lots of Teens in Hats

Radio Rebel is the kind of film where all the of the many teens wear hats. Different styles of hats, and at different times. Why bother with genuinely building character, when you can use a hat to do it for you? After all, it is a straight to TV Disney Channel movie. We’re immediately introduced to the concept of Radio Rebel, an anonymous radio broadcast by someone from Lincoln Bay High School, who goes by the same name. Among the […]

Rise of the Tomb Raider Review – More of the Same

I loved the first Tomb Raider. Well, not the first first one, that’s actually aged very poorly, but the reboot. It reviewed well, but picked up quite a lot of criticism for being an “Uncharted” clone, which I always found a bit unfair as Uncharted was very much inspired by Tomb Raider in the first place. It’s actually great there are more third person action games like that around. It adds to the creative conversation, and should force both of […]

The “Oscars” – Games of the Year 2015 Awards

Last year when I wrote my games of the year list I threw in some bonus awards besides the month-on-months and overall. Now, there are even more bonus awards, because if you head on over to Rice Digital me and my coworker Peter gave our picks on a variety of categories, from Most Frustrating, to Most Awe-Inspiring Moment. It’s a good read. Without going on too much, here are my normal Games of the Year awards. Just Fuck Off Already […]

Sorority Wars Review (2009) – If M. Night Shyamalan Made a Teen Chick Flick

Sorority Wars is a made-for-TV film for Lifetime that originally aired in 2009.┬áIt bears no relation to either Bride Wars or Star Wars. Or at least, not officially. It stars Lucy Hale as Katie Parker, before her better known role in Pretty Little Liars as the one with the unhealthy relationship with the teacher. The basic premise of Sorority Wars is pretty simple to understand. It’s about two sororities going to war with one another to win the big sorority […]

Batman: The Court of Owls Review (2011, vol. 1) – Starting the New 52 Without Skipping a Beat

The Court of Owls collects the first seven issues of the Batman (2011) series — the first few issues of Batman after the series-wide New 52 reboot. But, you’d be forgiven about not knowing there was a reboot at all if you just picked this up. In a way I suppose that could be the purpose. It’s not a complete fresh start, everything’s just been moved back to the default. Batman (as with other New 52 leads) has been made […]
